Where
We Are
Cortijo Vacas Gordas
sits in the foothills of the Sierra de Lujar, 300m (984 ft) above
sea level, on the Costa
Tropical in
the Andalucia
region of Spain. The
Sierra de Lujar is a mountain that rises to 1800 metres (5905 ft),
beyond which is Las
Alpujarras, a
valley that separates the Sierra de Lujar from the snow-capped Sierra
Nevada mountains. Just imagine skiing in the Sierra
Nevada and swimming in the Mediterranean on the same day.
Los Carlos, the
nearest village, has a church, health centre, school and bar, while
Castell de Ferro, the nearest centre of any size is just 7km (4.35
miles) away. A fishing village with extensive beaches, it really
comes alive in the Spanish summer months of July and August, when
every village has its own fiesta. This is the real Spain, a mix of
unspoilt landscape and an agricultural economy comprising of olive
and almond groves, intensive vegetable cultivation and fishing.
Moorish architecture still exist within this coastal zone.
